Dani Harris, a BJJ blue belt out of Vision MMA in Cincinatti, Ohio, is organizing a women’s only no-gi tournament on December 7th. The tournament will be held at Backwoods Grappling Academy and the winner of each division takes home $125.00 prize money.

We asked Dani a few questions about her life and how this event came about.

What do you do in real life?

I am originally from Louisville, Kentucky but recently moved to Cincinnati, Ohio to be part of a growing group of dental practices in this area.

How long have you been training? Do you prefer gi or no-gi?

I wrestled in high school back in 2010. After graduation, college and in the beginning of my career I found myself out of shape and bored. In 2014 I went to a gym to try something different, cardio boxing, and saw people doing jiu-jitsu. I gave it a try and have not looked back since. I am a blue belt and train at Vision MMA under Shawn Hammonds. My primary jiu-jitsu coach is Jeremy Pender.

I train primarily no-gi because I also fight MMA. I train in the gi now about once a week. I try to compete as much as possible, from MMA to small tournaments to IBJJF to super fights. I am usually always game to get in a good scrap.

How did you come up with the tournament idea?

I used to be the leader of the Kentuckiana women’s jiu-jitsu club and hosted seminars in the area with female athletes, including MMA fighter Cat Zingano and Olympic bronze medalist wrestler Randi Miller. I handed over my position in late 2017 to focus on my own training and to coach high school wrestling. I am currently training for IBJJF no-gi World Championship and this tournament is an effort for me to raise money for flight, hotel and registration fees. Michelle Day, also a blue belt, from Louisville will be rooming with me and competing alongside me.

Hosting a tournament seemed like a good opportunity for me to get back in the women’s bjj community in the organizing role and to continue encouraging women to stick with the sport and compete. I have cash prizes for the winners because ladies train hard and we love cash prizes just like the boys! I have a few super fights lined up: a kids super fight with two 9-year-old girls and a brown belt super fight with two very experienced female martial artists, Marissa Pender and Gina Elliott.

What weight and belt brackets do you have and who else is involved with the event?

The tournament is broken up into 4 brackets: white belt 135 lbs and below, white belt 136 and up, blue/purple belt 135 and below, blue/purple blet 136 and up. The rules are IBJJF rules and the entry fee is $40.00.

The tournament will be held at Backwoods Grappling Academy in Carrollton, Kentucky. The owners of the gym, Randall and Emily Prince, are my very close friends and they are the main sponsors of the event by providing the venue. They have always supported my crazy dreams and ideas, I cannot thank them enough! Jacob Propst has helped me with some cool graphic design and marketing/social media ideas. Helm Raiments, no-gi clothing company, has offered 20% off code to all women who register for the tournament before November 15.

Any final words?

I absolutely love hosting women’s bjj events, seminars and now a tournament, so this definitely is just the beginning! I plan to continue my efforts of growing women’s jiu-jitsu in the Midwest and the Southeast for as long as I can. My heart is in the sport and with the people of this community. I look forward to one leaving my day job and making the greatest hobby my career. I aspire to be a female gym owner who can provide a safe and fun environment where girls and women can thrive and grow through BJJ. The sport has saved my life in more ways than one and I love being able to share it! Anyone interested in the Tri-State tournament, please contact me on Facebook.

Estonian BJJ Girls group, spearheaded by Laura Mallene, is organizing its very first women only BJJ camp in Tallinn, Estonia at the end of April.  The number of ladies taking up BJJ in this tiny county has grown exponentially in the past few years and they have displayed outstanding results at international tournaments. The camp welcomes jiu-jitsu women from any team and at any experience level for a fun weekend of learning, sharing and friendly rolls.

Helin and Liisi

  • Camp instructors are: Purple belt, Liisi Vaht, who is the highest ranking local female and 3D Treening women’s class instructor. She is 2017 IBJJF European Championship feather weight bronze medalist and 2017 Nordic Open gold medalist.
  • Purple belt, Helin Paara, who has been training BJJ since 2003 and took home gold medals at 2016 IMMAF European Open Championships and 2016 Finnish Female Fight Cup absolute weight class in purple/brown/black belt divison.
  • Blue belt, Kadri Vilba, who is the 2017 national champion in women’s wrestling and also an active MMA and BJJ competitor.

Don’t underestimate the skills of these ladies; Helin and Liisi have a very unique style cultivated by SBG Estonia head coach Priit Mihkelson. He is the innovator of Grillkana position and has spent years on developing his open guard game. Due to high demand, Priit Mihkelson will be teaching at the women’s camp as well. His teaching style is very detail oriented and highly entertaining at the same time.

The camp costs 15.00 euros for one day and 25.00 euros for two days. Travel from Finland, Sweden, Latvia and Lithuania is relatively short and inexpensive and for budget conscious travellers, the gym, Korrus 3, is offering overnight stay for a minimum donation of 5.00 euros. Don’t miss it; it’s a quaint place to visit and learn jiu-jitsu.

awesomeJiu-jitsu women in North Texas and surrounding areas are in for a treat this August. Two very accomplished black belts will be teaching women’s jiu-jitsu seminars in DFW area in a few weeks.

Being healthy is something most of us take for granted. Occasional flu or a smashed rib is annoying when you have busy life. No-one has time for that! What if you came down with a sudden illness that brought your life as you knew it to a halt? Can you imagine not being able to drive any more? Or not being able to go the store alone? Or not being able to work?

That is what our good friend, Shama Ko, the coordinator of Girls in Gis is dealing with right now. About a month ago, she suddenly collapsed on the mat, and had a seizure. She has been to the ER a few times; seen several doctors, and her medical bills are beginning to pile up. There are still lots of tests to be done, to find out what is causing her body to act this way. She is determined to get to the bottom of this but cannot do it alone.

There are lots of organizations asking for donations this time of the year but please consider purchasing one or a few of these beautiful, 8 inch, woven, phoenix inspired patches that we designed specially for Shama’s fundraiser. The patches cost $8.00, and you can order yours here. Our goal is to raise $2,500 to help getting her life back on track.

If you would like to go to a roll-a-thon, an open mat or a seminar, please check out the locations (Denver, Austin, San Diego, Lakeland, Chandler, Edmond, Monterrey,) that are participating in the fundraiser on December 13-14.

BJJ in Poland, irena preiss, women's brazilian jiu jitsu, women's grappling camp

heelsIrena Preiss, the newest female black belt in Poland has put together the very first women’s BJJ camp, Sparingi Na Obcasach (Sparring in Heels), this month. The camp is held on June 21-22 in Krakow, in Grappling Kraków club. An array of activities have been arranged for the weekend, not just lots of sparring.

Psychologist, Kasia Toeplitz, will be giving a lecture about successful mental preparation for a competition. CrossFit Krakow trainer, Magdalena Rutkowska, will show some useful exercises on how to strengthen the body, and how to stretch after training. Capoeira Feminina instructor, Natalia Panek, will prepare a traditional Brazilian warm up, and show various capoeira techniques that can be used in BJJ.

Irena Preiss, the organizer, describes the upcoming camp: “We have lots of things planned, and I’m sure we will manage them all. There will be plenty of time for discussions, and drilling techniques. Many of you worry that you have been training for just a couple of months, and that you lack experience. Don’t worry, you will do fine. Please don’t forget that the main goal of the camp is to learn from each other, to support each other, and have fun. You will have questions, and we will try to find answers. You will experience difficulties with certain positions, and we will try to show you how to handle it. You will be tired, but do not worry. You can take a break, and join us whenever you are ready. This will be great and we will make it unforgettable together”.
