We have great news! Traditional white, blank gis are now in stock in our most popular sizes. No embroidery, no patches, no contrast stitching. A very affordable price of $80.00 makes it a perfect starter gi. Blank gis are also an ideal canvas for adventurous BJJ women who want to dye their gis in vibrant colors that are not in mass production or for ladies who just prefer classic, non-embellished gis. Jackets are made of our favorite soft crystal weave and pants are medium weight cotton drill. Mix and match options are available upon request. The most popular sizes, A1 and A4, are already running low due to preorders.

Separate pants are also available in sizes A0-A4, including tall and curvy options. Drill pants are remarkably soft yet durable and feature Fenom standard double reinforcement from the upper thigh all the way down to the bottom of the pant leg, eight loops and a flat drawstring. Happy shopping and happy training!

We are excited about fall; two new pearl weave gi designs are arriving in the first week on November. The gi jackets are made of 550 gr brushed pearl weave fabric and pants are soft, medium-weight cotton drill. White gis feature light pink and salmon color, oversized embroidery on the left sleeve and pants. Black gis are made of the same material and display stunning purple blossoms. Full picture of the gis will be revealed in a couple of weeks and we hope you like them as much as we do!

After a long hiatus we are bringing back black gis with pink embroidery. Pink is very dear to us since it was our very first color in 2009 and has not always been received well. BJJ women either love it or hate it, there is no in-between. This time we used 550 gr pearl weave plus fabric for jackets and 10 oz light-weight ripstop material for pants. Finely detailed embroidery is on our signature spot, right thigh, and the left lower corner of the jacket. These beauties are scheduled to land before the end of October.

If you are not too happy about the approaching colder weather and long, dark, depressing nights, grab one of our t-shirts which remind you of endless summer days; the fun in the sun and all sorts of shenanigans. Happy shopping!

Let’s Talk About Gi Pants Part I

haremblueHow to choose great fitting gi pants? It can be very easy or tricky depending on where you fall on the size chart and one size definitely does not fit all! In the first part of the article we will talk about sizing and the second part will cover material options in-depth.

Size

Size chart shows the range of weight and height and should be used as a general guideline. If you are not sure about your size, always ask! There is a good chance we have found the correct size pants for someone with similar measurements and build. For a woman smack in the middle of the size bracket it is pretty easy to pick the right pair. At 5’7” and 145 pounds with athletic build, you can order a pair of A2s* and the pants will be a great fit. Someone at the same height but at 175 lbs with wider hips is probably going to ponder, “Should I go with the weight bracket or height bracket for size?” The answer is to go with the weight and choose curvy pants.  A tall lady at 5’10” and 145 lbs should go with the height bracket and pick tall pants for best fit.

Women come in so many varying shapes and sizes that weight and height are not the only thing we ask when helping with sizing. Sometimes we may need to dig deeper. Fibbing about your weight a little bit is fine but anything over ten pounds can result in incorrect fit. Being honest about your jeans size is appreciated; it helps prevent disappointment and costly exchange process.

  • Pants width

We recommend an easy fit test. When you put the pants on; pinch the loose material at the side of your hip at the widest point and if you have about 1.5-2 inches of fabric between your fingers, you have a good, pretty fitted pair of pants with just enough room to move around and no excess bagginess. When you have less than 1.5 inches material between your fingers, the pants will be too tight. Gi pants should fit a little loose, not skin-tight like yoga pants. It is uncomfortable to roll in super tight gi pants. Not only do they constrain movement but also make you feel self-conscious knowing that the back side is being exposed and the seams are about to bust open. If you have way more than 2 inches of material between your fingers, you will have very loose-fitting pants, almost like judo pants looseness. There is nothing wrong with loose fit, it is ultimately all about personal preference. Some women prefer fitted pants, some prefer looser cut.

If you are in between sizes or your weight tends to fluctuate 5-7 pounds within a month, having a pair of curvy pants is a great option. Extra couple of inches of room around hips and waist makes all the difference when you feel bloated or heavy. Regular, slim cut pants are perfect for the days or seasons when you are little lighter or want more fitted pants. If your goal is to lose some weight, we suggest to buy a pair of pants that fits right now, not at your goal weight. Tight pants will not motivate you more; they make training unpleasant. Buy a smaller size as a reward when you have reached your goal. Even though we make a variety of sizes, there are a few cases when a customer is out of our weight and height range and sadly we don’t have the perfect pair for that shape.

  • Pants length

When you put on a brand new pair of gi pants, the bottom of the pant leg should touch or sit on top of your foot. After shrinkage the pants will be right above the ankle bone which is the preferred length. If your pants start out at the ankle bone length, they will become capri pants over time. Some people don’t mind capri length gi pants but if you are a competitor, the pants may not pass inspection depending on how strictly the rules are followed. Do not hem the pants before you have washed them a couple of times. Most of the time hot water wash and dryer takes care of the extra length.

*Size refers to Fenom size chart and Fenom gi pants. Every brand uses slightly different size charts and our recommendation does not necessarily work with other brands’ pants.

Sometimes the gi you purchased is incorrect size or you happen to have buyer’s remorse and an exchange or return is in order.

This is a friendly reminder what not to return:

pethair

  • Gi covered in pet hair and lint. We love furry babies too but please run a lint roller over the gi before you pack it up.
  • Gi with stains (food, blood, dirt). Yes, odd but it has happened.
  • Washed items.
  • Hemmed pants or altered jackets.
  • Gi that has been worn to class. Try it on but don’t take it for a full test drive.
  • Clearance items. If you are not sure about sizing, please ask before purchasing. Clearance items are not to be returned and forcing the refund through by complaining to your credit card company is not cool.
  • Items with size tags or labels removed.

Thank you and happy training!

curvyYou asked for A1 curvy jackets, and we made them! We are excited to announce that every new batch of women’s gis from next month on will have A1 curvy jackets available.

A1 jacket, and A1 curvy pants combination is one the most popular mix-and-match sizes ever since we started making curvy pants. It is a great option for ladies with narrow shoulders, small chest, wider hips, and thicker thighs.

Lately we have received lots of requests from ladies who are not that small on top, and need a roomier jacket. The bigger bust, and wider shoulders fit into A2 but the sleeves are a tad too long for that particular height.

If your height is between 5’3” and 5’5”, and need a jacket that covers your chest, does not pinch in the armpits, and does not have hugely long sleeves; this is the size for you. Pair it up with A1 Curvy pants for a great fitting gi.

We are giving away one black pearl weave, and one white pearl weave plus gi to two volunteers who are willing to send us some feedback on this new size. We would like to give these gis to the ladies who have purchased a mix-and-match set before (A1/A1C or A2/A1C) so they can compare the fit. Email us or comment below if you are interested.

This is a story about the gi design process. This is also a story about an unusual relationship. Fenom Kimonos is a Dallas based company run by Triin, the designer who works for Fenom is Agnes. These two Estonians are childhood friends, one lives in Dallas, the other one in Pärnu, Estonia. A couple of years ago the ladies reconnected and a new professional relationship took off. Two friends living thousands of miles away and working on making classy women’s jiu-jitsu gear, how cool is that?

It all starts with a vague idea, and the most annoying request a designer can get: Make something pretty! Sometimes we know what we want to do, sometimes we know what we definitely do not want to do. This time it started with a desire to do a flower design that stays away from the widely used Asian and Hawaiian influence in BJJ designs. So instead of looking far, we looked at our beautiful Estonian cornflower (rukkilill) and decided to go with the nordic vibe.

B3A0v5Qqmj

The best way to showcase the national flower was to incorporate some folk patterns and our signature F. First it seemed like an impossible task. How can you mix a geometric shape with our curvy F and make it look like a cornflower?

Estonian folk patterns use a lot of geometric shapes and colors, each having a specific and mythological meaning. Even the tiniest islands and counties have their recognizable color scheme and preferred patterns. Mothers have taught their daughters for centuries how to knit, crochet and embroider these patterns, keeping the skills alive. We wanted to honor our mothers’ and grandmothers’ effort, and make something meaningful not just for us, but for all girls and women.

pilt_19

We decided to focus on the octagon (kaheksakand), also known as an eight-pointed star or cross, which is one the most significant and widely used shapes in our patterns. It represents dawn, and a new start, it brings good fortune and protects us, our souls, and our homes.

IMG_0044

The designer went to the drawing board and came back with a few design concepts. Some were scrapped right away, couple of more tries and there was something that caught our eye. A few more tweaks and color changes, and three best ones emerged.

F-rahvusmuster-4 (1)-01We were going back and forth, arguing if light blue or dark blue would look the best in real life on the gi. After we finally picked the two favorites, the design got sent to the factory in Pakistan for the test embroidery. Sometimes the design looks awesome on paper but not so good when embroidered. This time we were pleased with the test and didn’t change anything about the F. The embroidery looked beautiful and delicate, crisp and cool, just like we had hoped for.

number 1 and 2

More back and forth discussions, since there was no clear winner. Eventually we picked our favorite, drew up the full gi design, added a few more design elements and sent it to the production. Now the waiting started. A few weeks of nail-biting and the prototype was ready! But oh no, something unexpected happened. Contrast stitching…. this was not in the specs! Somehow the factory decided to do blue stitching. After a complete mild panick attack, the more we looked at it, the more we actually liked the contrast stitching. Some mistakes are not all that bad after all!

sinine_NEW

So there you have it. This is how the whole process works. It looks simple but it’s not easy. It takes between 3-6 months to bring out a new product. Delays are normal, some ideas never make it to the finish line and that is okay too. Over the years we have realized that this is part of the process, you just need to get used to it and not fight it.

Now we are anxiously waiting for the DHL truck to deliver the new gi shipment so we can take product shots, update the website, test the gi out on the mat, and see if it is going to be well received by the customers. We hope you like it. Thank you and stay Powered by She!
